Yet his origins and training do not fully explain the man. What Philip and Macedonia had to offer, Alexander made his own, but Philip and Macedonia also made Alexander form an important context for understanding Alexander himself. This biography begins not with one of the universally known incidents of Alexander's life, but with an account of his father, Philip of Macedonia, whose many-territoried empire was the first on the continent of Europe to have an effectively centralized government and military. Green describes his Alexander as "not only the most brilliant (and ambitious) field commander in history, but also supremely indifferent to all those administrative excellences and idealistic yearnings foisted upon him by later generations, especially those who found the conqueror, tout court, a little hard upon their liberal sensibilities." Green, a Cambridge-trained classicist who is also a novelist, portrays Alexander as both a complex personality and a single-minded general, a man capable of such diverse expediencies as patricide or the massacre of civilians. His dream was at times characterized as a benevolent interest in the brotherhood of man, sometimes as a brute interest in the exercise of power. Until recently, popular biographers and most scholars viewed Alexander the Great as a genius with a plan, a romantic figure pursuing his vision of a united world.

This is not one of the usual action packed, heart pumping, seat of your pants hooks. I was immediately drawn into the book by the engaging narrative. And I will say this-about Diamond Eyes- read those pages and then try to act like you're not interested in reading the rest of the book. I usually don't put a lot of stock in the cover or the blurb, but prefer to read at least ten or more pages when possible. So I decided to go ahead and try the bit of sample the author is offering. I was, in fact, taking a break from another tedious novel that I felt lacked some bit of style to keep me interested. I had made it to the author's web page and looked at the covers, which were intriguing. I honestly didn't know what to expect from this novel. So because I can never stick to my “to read” plans, I deviated from the list I made at the start of the month and chose this book as it meant I was still sticking with my “Queer books for Pride” theme. Famous for being a relatively early text to feature a solidarity of women as protagonist figures, the novel inaugurated later feminist British literature. Eventually, realizing they have a number of commonalities, the women reach the moralistic conclusion that it is prudent and wise to seek social connection rather than exclusivity. It ties together the narratives of four unique women living in Arnim’s present-day England, who somewhat reluctantly band together to vacation in Italy. A light and pastoral novel compared to her other works, British author Elizabeth von Arnim’s historical fiction The Enchanted April (1922) was inspired by her experience touring the Italian Riviera. |
